How to Tell a Natural Candle
- Check the wax: soy, beeswax and coco-soy are natural; paraffin is petroleum-derived.
- Check the wick: natural candles use cotton or wood, never a lead-cored metal wick.
- Ask about the fragrance: natural fragrance and essential oils smell softer.
- Look at the surface: the whitish crystallisation on soy candles is a sign of authenticity, not a fault.
- Consider how it was made: small surface variations are normal in hand-poured candles.

Natural Wax vs Paraffin
Paraffin is a by-product of petroleum refining: cheap and easy to produce, but it leaves more soot as it burns. Soy wax comes from a renewable plant source, burns cooler and longer, and leaves no soot.
